What the sign says

A marked downhill gradient, its percentage shown on the sign. Go down in the gear you would climb in, so the engine holds the car back.

The exam trap

Continuous braking heats the brakes until they fade. Going downhill, the vehicle coming up has priority where passing is impossible.
