The road to your licence.

Category B, car. Motorcycles share the basic theory; the rest of the path they do not. The order matters: skip one step and the next one is blocked.

  1. Step 01

    The first-aid course

Ten hours at a recognised provider, taken before applying for the learner permit. The certificate stays valid for six years.

    OAC art. 10
    Valid 6 years
  2. Step 02

    The eyesight test

At an optician or a doctor, on an official form. The result goes with your learner permit application.

    OAC art. 9
  3. Step 03

The application to the cantonal office

A form endorsed by your commune, a photo, ID, the first-aid certificate and the eyesight test. The cantonal office checks the file and calls you to the theory exam.

    OAC art. 11 et 11b
  4. Step 04

    The basic theory exam

Fifty questions in forty-five minutes, three options each, no partial credit: you need 135 points out of 150. If you fail, a waiting period applies before the next attempt.

    OAC art. 13
    From age 17
  5. Step 05

    The learner permit

Issued after the theory exam, valid twenty-four months. Outside driving school you need an accompanying person of at least twenty-three, licence-holder for three years and not on probation; the L plate must be visible.

    OAC art. 15 et 16 · LCR art. 15
    Valid 24 months
  6. Step 06

    The traffic awareness course

Eight hours at a driving school, compulsory before sitting the practical test. It covers hazard perception, the place of other road users and the real cost of speed.

    OAC art. 18
  7. Step 07

    The practical test

Possible from eighteen. Anyone who got the learner permit before turning twenty must have held it for at least twelve months — that is the point of lowering the age to seventeen: to lengthen the learning phase, not shorten it.

    OAC art. 22 al. 1bis
    From age 18
  8. Step 08

    The probationary licence

Three years. An offence leading to withdrawal extends it by a year; a second during the extension annuls the licence and forces you to start over after a waiting period.

    LCR art. 15a · OAC art. 24a
    3 years
  9. Step 09

    The follow-up training

One day of training taken during the probation period. Without it, the unrestricted licence is not issued when the three years are up.

    OAC art. 27a
  10. Step 10

    The unrestricted licence

After three years without annulment and once the follow-up training is done, the unlimited-duration licence is issued. Driving is governed by the same rules — only your margin for error changes.

    LCR art. 15a · OAC art. 27c
